Fractures Q&A

What is a fracture?

A fracture is another name for a broken bone. Although your bones are strong enough to support your body, they can break when met with too great a force. Khaimov provides complete care for many types of fractures, including:

  • Hip fractures
  • Tibia fractures
  • Knee fractures
  • Ankle fractures
  • Wrist fractures
  • Shoulder fractures

There are many ways your bones can break. At Quality Orthopedics and Complete Joint Care, P.C. Dr. Khaimov treats basic fractures that involve a crack in the bone. He doesn’t provide care for complex, high-energy trauma fractures that may cause the bone to become impacted or shatter into many pieces.

What causes fractures?

Fractures happen when a force stronger than your bone changes the shape of that bone. This may occur suddenly, like during a sports injury or car accident, or it may result from repetitive stress, such as running.

In some cases, fractures may be due to osteoporosis, a medical condition that weakens your bones. Osteoporosis can cause your bones to break in instances where they normally wouldn’t. This condition is a common cause of hip fractures among older adults.

How do I know if I have a fracture?

Fractures that occur suddenly usually cause immediate, intense pain. In addition to pain, you may experience the following signs and symptoms of a fracture:

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Visible deformity
  • Inability to move or bear weight on the broken joint or bone

Because fracture symptoms are similar to those of other injuries, such as a sprain, it’s critical to get an accurate diagnosis. Call Quality Orthopedics and Complete Joint Care P.C. as soon as you suspect a fracture.

How are fractures diagnosed and treated?

First, Dr. Khaimov carefully evaluates your overall condition and assesses the extent of your injury. He asks you to describe how you got hurt and reviews your medical history.

X-ray imaging tests are the most common way to diagnose a fracture. These tests can reveal whether the bone is broken as well as the location and severity of the fracture.

Depending on the type of fracture you have, Dr. Khaimov may recommend one or more of the following treatments:

  • Putting the bones back into proper position
  • Stabilizing the bone with a cast or brace
  • Medication to reduce pain and fight infection
  • Physical therapy to restore normal function
