Knee Q&A

What are common knee conditions?

All of these structures are vulnerable to injuries and illnesses that cause knee pain. At Quality Orthopedics and Complete Joint Care, Dr. Khaimov treats many problems that affect the knee, including, but not limited to:

Arthritis of the knee

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis to affect the knee. This condition involves wear-and-tear damage to your knee’s cartilage.

Meniscus tears

Two special pieces of cartilage (menisci) provide cushioning and stability inside your knee joint. Meniscus tears can happen suddenly during sports or they may result from degenerative damage over time.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears

ACL tears are among the most common sports injuries to affect the knee. The ACL is one of four main ligaments in your knee. This ligament can become stretched or torn during common sports movements, like stopping suddenly and changing direction (cutting).

Other sports injuries

Knee injuries that occur during sports often involve damage to more than one part of the knee. For example, meniscus tears and ACL tears often happen together. Other sports injuries that affect the knee include fractures, tendonitis, and sprains.

What are nonsurgical treatments for knee conditions?

After he carefully examines your knee and diagnoses your condition, Dr. Khaimov recommends the best course of treatment. Nonsurgical treatments for knee pain include:

  • Activity modification
  • Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE)
  • Immobilization in a brace or cast
  • Physical therapy
  • Medications to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Corticosteroid and/or viscosupplementation injections

Depending on your specific condition and activity level, nonsurgical treatment may be all you need.

When would I need knee surgery?

Dr. Khaimov always uses the most conservative treatment possible. Conservative may recommend surgery if:

  • Your knee pain and symptoms persist despite treatment
  • You’re an athlete who wants to return to sports
  • Your condition is severe and won’t heal without surgery

If surgery is necessary, Dr. Khaimov uses minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques whenever possible. Knee arthroscopy is a common treatment for meniscus tears and ACL tears. Advanced cases of knee arthritis may require open surgery, such as a total knee replacement.
